29th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment).
Formerly employed as a farmer in Canada.
Enlisted in Calgary, Canada. Died aged 30 on the 13th October 1916 in Newcastle Hospital of wounds received in France at the Somme.
Son of Richard and Annie of the Packhorse.
Buried in PURTON (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD Marker 6. 1.
Robert was attested in Calgary, Canada, giving his trade on enlistment as that of a Farmer. He listed his Next Of Kin as Mrs A Grimes(Mother), The Packhorse, Purton, Wiltshire.
On joining up he was attached to the 29th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
I was unable to find any direct reference to Robert being wounded on the Somme and subsequent evacuation back to England. Robert died on the 16th of October 1916. At the time he was recovering from wounds that he had received on the Somme battlefield.
Robert is buried in the family plot inside the churchyard at St Mary’s.
