8th August 2009

New photos added for the War memorial showing the names listed & a new photo to give a "Then & now" view of the War Memorial from 1920 & 2009 in the "Village War Memorials section .

To this date £432 has been sent to The Royal British Legion through sales of my booklet.

I hope that those who benefit from information found on my site may wish to donate a small amount to either The RBL or Help for Heroes.

The full list of Purton connections to the Great War will soon be posted under the "Full Purton Great War list". This will be the main area for change as i appear to have confirmed no further fatalities to add to the list already posted.

This list will be over 400 names, it will include ALL village connections whether they died or survived. If you find a name of intrest please contact me to recieve any further material i may hold.

How the research progressed

MAY 2007,  Surveyed the War memorial in Purton for the War Memorials Trust (WMT) . Noted down the names etc & casualy researched a couple of them just out of intrest.  This led from one thing to another, i read Dr Belts book covering the War Memorials in Purton & realised that slowly i was finding more detail than was currently published.

JUNE 2007, research was started proper.  Whilst researching the names on the Memorial i started to uncover more names connected with the village that were also of intrest.  With alot of help online with my friends @ the Great War Forum i was able to carry out indepth research on some & a more general search on the rest of the names. Decided that the best way to get the detail displayed would be in a booklet, Rick gave me the advice & the kids at Braden Forest joined the project & agreed to do me the drawings. I also decided that ALL proceeds should go to a worthy cause, i eventually decided that The Royal British Legion would recieve any monies raised.

MARCH 2008, first print run of 120 copies.

APRIL 2008, got the Evening Advertiser to do me a bit of coverage that boosted sales outside the village.  It was around this time i realised that i was getting so much detail that the booklet alone wouldn`t be able to convey all the detail, a WEB site would have to be created to give all the researched material a better chance of reaching more people.

APRIL 24th, 2nd print run of a further 50 copies.

JULY 2008, happy to be able to send a cheque to The Royal British Legion head office in London for £313.

AUGUST 2008, further cheque to The RBL for £50.

AUGUST 24th, WEB site launched.

There remains alot of material to research, i am also collecting photos of headstones from across the globe, so far i have over 55, hopefully i will be able to collect photos for all Purton men who fell, these i will in the fullness of time display in a gallery page on this site.

NOVEMBER 8th, Photographs of headstones & Memorial tablets added to the site, please ask permission to reproduce them.
