You can find 4 other headstones located in the churchyard that carry commemorations to servicemen who are buried or commemorated overseas, 3 of which are Purton men listed on the memorial. It is not uncommon to find headstones in cemeteries that carry such commemorations. It was simply not possible to repatriate the fallen back to the UK or dependant territories during or after the Great War. Many families made a pilgrimage to the battlefields after the War, but for many more this wasn’t possible and so their loved ones were recorded on existing family headstones.
